Yes there is a connection between the foods you eat and the overall health of your teeth and gums. We all know that eating less sugar is good for our teeth, but who would have thought that choosing whole grains is good too?

A fourteen year study (according to 'RealAge') reported that men who chose whole grains were twenty-three percent less likely to develop gum disease. The group seeing the most extreme benefit ate up to three and half servings a day - that is just two slices of 100% whole wheat bread, half-cup brown rice and a cup of granola. That little whole grain is easy to work into our diets and wonderful to reap the benefits.

Whole grains make our hearts healthier and our blood sugar levels healthier, and for people with diabetes this study found that lower blood sugar levels puts you at less risk for gum disease. Healthy gums are vital to your overall health, and we invite you to talk with us, visit our website and do your own research to find out all the reasons why. In addition, learn the tips on all the ways you can improve your gum health and your overall oral health.

My wife loves Dr. Oz. She watches his show as often as she can, regularly discovering little tips and ideas on how we can live longer, healthier lives.

This past Friday, I came home to Meridith telling me about the importance of giving up our bad habits. Dr. Oz's Friday show covered the risk bad habits have on our overall health. He did a segment on the impact curing just one bad habit would have on your overall life and health. Audience members shared their secrets - everything from smoking, to not sleeping, to eating late at night, and the results were incredible. If audience members stopped those habits today,. they would not only live longer, they would live lives that were far healthier.

And yes, there was even a habit related to your dental care. One audience member wanted to stop neglecting her teeth - that was her bad habit. Dr. Oz's response. If she would start flossing her teeth regularly, starting right now, she could extend her life by six years. She would cut her risk of heart disease, diabetes and several other diseases so common as we grow older.

Doctors and researchers are discovering that the care of your teeth is becoming more and more important to your overall health. Next time your in, please take a moment ask us questions and let us share several tips and ideas of how you can improve your overall dental health. The care of your teeth and gums is important to us, and we want all of our patients to live longer, healthier lives!

Cannot believe it is our last day in Honduras - this week has gone so fast! We spent the last three days high in the mountains in the most remote villages of Honduras. As you can imagine this is where the people are the poorest and where they need the most help. They work - what little work they have - in the fields picking peppers and their big crop coffee. Even the children work - adults can earn up to $5 per day and children (little as young as 5 and 6) earn a dollar.

They are such a happy people, and while they are poor there is a true sense of community. Yesterday, we saw a deaf mute who has no family. The community cares for her. Makes sure she has a home, has food and comes with her to see the doctor. It truly warms your heart to see this. The poverty is unbelievable as you can imagine, and the people often go hungry two months out of the year. Mostly a function of their lack of understanding of saving what little money they have. As remote as these village are (and they are remote - think of any place you can in WNC that you believe is remote and it would be considered a town here) coke, pepsi and the chip manufacturers still find their way here - it is crazy. The people spend what little money they have on these foods. Rotting their teeth and hurting their health. If they are lucky they have a school and can go until the sixth grade. After that they have to find their way to the town to seek a higher education. Not many are able to do that.

All in all it has been an amazing trip, and I look forward to coming home and sharing stories and my experience. We are definitely doing this again next year!

Our first day was trying but fun! You have to remember we are running off generators and extension cords with very little water. Getting dental units and hand pieces up and running in these conditions is a challenge to say the least.

We managed though to run three dental chairs with me doing dentistry and training the young dental students. I actually worked as a dental assistant some yesterday, and I had to think that my team would have gotten a big laugh . Been a few years since I did that! The goal is, if I can teach more, than these dentists will be better able and prepared to provide care to the Hondurans after we are gone.

We worked straight through lunch (just like at home!) Opened the clinic at 8:30 and shut down at 4:30. It takes an hour to drive there. Last night we broke down all the dental units and packed them up as we head to the remote villages today. This should be interesting. The illiteracy rate is about 85% up there and the poverty quite severe.

While we have very little down time, our hotel and our host, Don Udo, are both quite nice, charming and comfortable. Our group is fantastic, and we are having a great time. I will try to blog more tomorrow and tell you about what we encounter in the mountains. In the meantime, I have learned one thing - do NOT eat stone ground tortillas they wear your teeth out VERY fast!!

Talk with you soon!

          Ola!
Last night and today have been incredible already! We are a crew of about 35, 10 of whom are medical and dental students that are fluent in English as well as their native Spanish. They have been such a tremendous asset already.

We went out to the clinic today, and got all set up. You truly realize how much we take for granted in the US. We found out on our trip down that at least 90% of this country gets their power strictly from generator. Establishing our dental operatories and getting our sterilization process in place has been a big job today. Again, something that we in this country truly take for granted.

The country side is gorgeous here and the people are so kind and very grateful. In fact, one of the dental students I was working with last night and helping with his dental skills; bought me a thank you gift today. I was deeply humbled and caught quite off guard. As I said the people here are so kind.

As you can imagine the country is very poor, and the poverty has increased due to unemployment and the drop off in tourism.

We start our clinics tomorrow, and will work in Copan as well as head to the mountains to provide care for people that most likely have never seen a doctor or a dentist.

Thank you again for taking an interest in our adventure, and thanks to the staff for taking care of things at home!

I need to begin this entry with a big thank you! My staff has been amazing, ordering, organizing and giving their time to help me get prepared to head to Honduras. Another big thank you goes out to Debbie Kasey and Patterson Dental. Debbie has truly been a driving force. She has worked to find donated supplies, worked with Patterson to donate supplies, and just put so much time and effort into getting us what we need to make this trip successful.

This trip has made me realize how much I take so much for granted. I've never stopped and thought just how much has to go into getting ready for a trip like this. We are going to a country, where they literally have almost nothing in the way of supplies and equipment we need to provide good care. So, we have to take it all with us. Portable chairs, lights, instruments, and right down to the tiny details like floss and tooth paste. We have searched our supplies as well and donated everything we can. I feel great about everything we are taking with us, and providing the care the people of Honduras deserve.

Each member of the Rotary Bridgade (that is what they are calling us) is taking an extra 50 pound bag to carry on the plane. As the arilines charge and put limits on extra baggage now, even the cost just to arrive in Honduras creates extra challenges.

We arrive on Monday and will spend the day getting organized and setting up our clinics. Tuesday we get started. Half of our team will be working in Copan, while the other half heads off to the mountains. To remote parts of Honduras ,to provide dental and medical care to patients who most likely have never received either.

It promises to be an adventure and very worthwhile trip. I look forward to sharing it with you via our blog. And please, as you visit our office mention to my staff how terrific they are. There is no way I could go on this trip, no way I could provide care for the people of Honduras, without their help in getting me ready and their support in taking care of you - our patients, while I am gone!

Looking forward to sharing more soon!

This coming Sunday, my wife Meridith and I will be leaving on a medical/dental brigade (word the Rotary Club uses in place of mission) with the Asheville Rotary Club. It is our first trip with the Rotary Club and our first mission trip to Honduras. We are extremely excited to have this opportunity, and we are interested to share our experiences with our patients.

We will be arriving in San Pedro Sula (the second largest city in Honduras) on Sunday the 23, and we will spend Monday getting our supplies, setting up our clinics and organizing ourselves for a long week of work. We will provide dental and medical services both in San Pedro Sula, as well as to residents of the village of Copan. A small community located in the mountains of Honduras about three and half hours from San Pedro Sula. The village of Copan is quite remote and residents participating in these clinics will most likely have never seen or had opportunity to see a dentist or a doctor. Last year, the Rotary Brigade was able to provide services to well over 230 patients.

We will be blogging daily from Honduras and look forward to providing updates of our experiences and our progress. We are so fortunate to be going on this trip, and to be teamed with such a talented and fun group of people.

We look forward to talking with you from Honduras!
Dr. Powell

PS - and now worries our office will be opened and staffed! So, if you need care or have a question do not hesitate to call, email or just stop by!

Each weekend I devote a little time to personal development and learning the latest updates on advancements in dentistry.

This past weekend, as I was studying oral hygiene and the continuing links they are finding between our oral hygiene and our overall healthy; I thought this information - in particular - was very interesting.

Researchers have found that respiratory infections account for 15% of all infections for patients who are hospitalized and 50% of those end in death.

This team of Researchers believe there is a strong link between these infections and a patient's poor oral health. While this is some daunting information - the good news is remember you can control, impact and take care of your oral health.

The lesson to be learned is that taking care of your oral health might just save your life!

We look forward to seeing you!

Dr. Robert E Powell
