Kate – Patient Coordinator
Originally from Richmond Virginia, Kate is glad to now call Western North Carolina her home. With more than 13 years experience working in the dental field, Kate seems to have done it all. Having worked as an office manager, insurance manager, and patient coordinator, Doctor Powell considers himself lucky to have found someone with so much experience in the area of patient care.
Kate’s passion for dentistry stems from the positive impact she has seen it have on patient’s over the years, and feels that today’s dentistry can truly be life changing. The dedication to continuous learning, the commitment to always offer the latest in dental technology, and the deep caring for the individual are what attracted Kate to join the team of Asheville Dental Care. Sharing those values are what make her such a great addition to our team.
Laura—Hygienist
A great hygienist, with a real ability to connect and understand people, is how Dr. Powell describes Dental Hygienist Laura Bradford. “My patient’s rave about Laura and how comfortable and confident they feel when they are in her chair,” said Dr. Powell. I rarely go in her hygiene room or pass a patient in the hall without someone pointing out to me how much they like Laura,” he added.
A graduate of Chattanooga State Technical College, Laura was attracted to dentistry for the opportunity to truly help people and create beautiful, healthy smiles. She was attracted to Asheville Dental Care for the opportunity to accomplish both of those and work with a team that was committed to advancing their skills and knowledge with dentistry and technology.
Laura moved to Asheville to further her hygiene career and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. When not caring for her patients, Laura is an accomplished cyclist and avid hiker.

Tonya—Dental Assistant
If it is new, high tech or changing the face of dentistry, Dental Assistant Tonya Southerland wants to learn more about it. With more than 14 years’ experience in the dental field, Tonya joined Asheville Dental Care for the opportunity to further her education and knowledge beyond traditional dentistry.
“I had been working with dental implants for a number of years, and found I had a passion for this particular dental procedure. The difference we make in our patient’s lives combined with how much the technology is advancing make dental implants the perfect combination of both continuous reward and challenge. I came to Asheville Dental Care because I wanted to be part of a team that was committed to their patients, continuous learning and keeping up with the advancing technology.”
A native of Haywood County, Tonya is highly experienced in advanced dental procedures and dental surgery.
Diana—Dental Assistant
Diana was working her final dental rotation in dental assisting school, when Dr, Powell hired her on the spot. Smart, talented and a real go getter is how Dr. Powell describes Diana, and exactly why he wanted her on the team of Asheville Dental Care. A certified dental assistant, Diana was born in Italy to parents who were immigrating to the US from Russia. She has lived in California and Ohio, before settling in North Carolina.
Diana was drawn to dentistry because of her desire to help people. “Dentistry is filled with challenges and education, I love putting all I know into helping someone smile”
Committed to continuous learning, Diana is now enrolled in the dental hygiene program at AB Technical College.
Heather—Dental Assistant
For Heather it is all about relationships! Her passion for dentistry is driven by her love of people and the opportunity dentistry gives her to build relationships that make a difference in patient’s lives. “I really enjoy helping our patients. A beautiful smile makes such a difference to how a person feels, and the confidence they have; and it is so rewarding to be a part of that,” said Heather.
A native of Tryon, North Carolina, Heather is a graduate of Winston Salem University and Wake Technical College. “I hired Heather and wanted her to be a part of our team certainly because of her skills, but more so because of her energy and positive attitude,” said Dr. Powell. “She really cares about our patients, and it shows,” he added.
Heather chose to join the Asheville Dental Care team because of the consistent opportunities and diversity of what working in this office and with Dr. Powell means. “We provide so many different services for our patients, meaning that no matter their problem or issue we can handle it right here in our office – I like that,” said Heather. “This team and Dr. Powell are so committed to continuous learning and providing the most up-to-date technology and services available today. It is exciting to work here,” she added.
